Back to training after a mini break!

At the start of the year my weight was ridiculous so for additional motivation I had decided to sign up for several races with the ultimate goal of at least obtaining a PB at some point during the year, either at the 10k distance or the half marathon distance.

My first race was in February with the Mad Dog 10k.

I have ran this nearly every year since its inception and for me it is the best overall 10k around. The route, organisation and goody bags are the best I have encountered over the past 10 years of running. This is clearly why it keeps winning awards for the best 10k race in the country – entries open in October for next February if anyone is interested.

The flat course with calm weather is where I have previously ran a best time of 50 minutes but as I was getting back into the swing of things, this race was just a stepping stone to get my fitness up. Love this race and everyone is so friendly.

The first goal was to do well at the Liverpool Half Marathon, the conditions were good, I came into it with good fitness and I hit my early time markers with no problems but at the 10 mile marker I hit ‘the wall’ and my legs were like weights and not going anywhere fast.

I eventually came home at a time of 2hrs 5 minutes and I really wanted to get under the 2 hour marker and hit my PB of 1hr 57 recorded in 2011 at the Blackpool Half Marathon. So I was disappointed and after 3/4 months of hard training I thought I would give myself and my body a break over my birthday and Easter weekends.

Now with the Chester Half Marathon in my sight the training needs to kick back into gear, the last time I did this race I was around 2hrs 25, now my goal here is to beat this time rather than a distance PB due to the course being hilly.

But a time near 2 hours will and should show how far I have come and set me up for the 2 10k’s I have lined up. The Port Sunlight 10k which is a great run should be where I go for a PB but a couple of weeks later there is the Southport 10k which is flat and be a more realistic target.

Either way some great races coming up, I just hope I do these justice and I don’t feel too down from them. Plus I have entered the ballot for the 2018 Virgin London Marathon so I need to keep up the fitness to get a good time next year – should I be successful that is!
